I am an Engineering manager for a government subcontractor.  We use Excel (and Publisher) for making literally thousands of sketches for assembly instructions.
My entire department uses the 'Drawing' toolbar in Excel 2003 for doing the their sketches by programming a handfull of most used graphic icons (line, arc, freeform, ...linetype, bring to front, send to back, ....
distribute, ...
rotate, flip, etc.).  Excel
is used because of the need to use the spreadsheet for ease of placement of text and calculations of numbers on the sketches.  We could literally sketch an entire circuit card or wire harness in 10 to 15 minutes.
After an upgrade from Excel 2003 to Excel 2007, we found the large array of icon buttons at the top of the screen to be so time consuming to work with.  It has literally slowed the creation of sketches to roughly three to five times due to having to drop
multiple menus to get to the needed items.
The new "Ribbon" is more clutter than anything else.  The Quick Access toolbar at the top is already full of the other items that we need and so it is not desired to load the graphic items & formats there.  I was hoping that there had been enough complaints
about this to convince Microsoft to improve Excel to allow the creation of a second (or more) "programmable" pop up "quick access" toolbar(s) (similar to the old 'Drawing' icon menu).  And, having it at the bottom further reduces search time as opposed to
having it above with the other toolbars.
I have read other blogs of this same complaint (calling it a "nightmare") and have not seen any solutions given.  In the meantime, we have gone back to Excel 2003 in our office. 
Is anyone at Microsoft even listening?
